Do you need speakers as a beginner DJ?

It is recommended that beginners have speakers, but not 100% necessary.

It is recommended that beginners have speakers. It is great to hear your mixes come out of speakers, but you can get by with just headphones. Going back and forth between the CUE and Master on your DJ controller/mixer will allow you to hear what’s being mixed in vs what would be playing out of the speakers. You can't use your laptop speakers! But to get the most out of the sounds you're working with it's a great idea to invest in a good pair of headphones and some decent monitor speakers too.
